Hope Valley was the first full-fledged country club community in the suburbs of Durham. Built in the mid-1920s just before the stock market crash of 1929, Hope Valley remained a rural community until after WWII. Situated almost equidistant between Durham and Chapel Hill, Hope Valley was one of North Carolina’s first suburbs designed to be completely serviced by the automobile. The neighborhood is often referred to as “Old Hope Valley,” due to a relative absence of newly constructed homes in the community. The estates in Old Hope Valley are equally charming and impressive; and the Colonial and Tudor Revival architectural masterpieces are situated on generous, manicured lots.
